Single Again… Perfect

By Kenneth Stepp

Perfection… What I have learned is this word means something different to everyone. Your perfect wouldn’t be my perfect. As a mature single, I have evolved into whatever I am and I have hobbies and passions I want to share with my forever love. I believe this is true for almost everyone in this sea of singles.

I heard a song the other day that pierced my heart. It’s by Ed Sheeran and the song is titled, Perfect. I never listen to the radio, I’m sure this is a song most of my friends have heard a million times. For me, it was the first. The song reminded me that perfect exists for most of us. We travel the road of dating here and there in hopes of finding it.

I’ll share some of this song with you. It impacted me enough to write about it. I write about things so that I better understand them. Finding my perfect match has been a goal for several years. I have many friends that would say the same.

“I found a love for me

Darling, just dive right in

And follow my lead

Well, I found a girl, beautiful and sweet

I never knew you were the someone waiting for me”

Just dive right in and follow my lead? As a hopeless romantic, these words hit me in the right spot, my heart. In a world where love may be the most confusing element in it, two people diving in, giving the same effort and resolving to make it work. This, to me, is a wonderful thought. Maybe a dream. Two people in the same place at the same time seldom happens. Still a beautiful dream though.

“Baby, I’m dancing in the dark with you between my arms

Barefoot on the grass, we’re listenin’ to our favorite song

When you said you looked a mess, I whispered underneath my breath

But you heard it, darling, you look perfect tonight”

With you between my arms… That’s her spot. It’s where she knows to go when the world is too much. She knows she is loved and safe there. I’m a big man, one special friend calls me a giant. There’s a lot of room in my arms. There is something touching about holding someone tight. It’s a simple thing but complex enough to be elegant as well.

“ I found a woman, stronger than anyone I know

She shares my dreams, I hope that someday I’ll share her home

I found a love, to carry more than just my secrets”

I’m cherry picking lines from this song for a reason. There are things in the lyrics that hit me harder than others. She is a woman, stronger than anyone I know. We would share dreams and someday a home. We’d have secrets but not from one another. The classic American love story. Some call this old fashion. I’ve tried the new way. I will instead, stick to what I know works.

When I began dating as a much younger person, there was no internet. Things were so different. Today everything is so fast. Finding a date these days is as easy as logging in and looking at the menu. Can something that last come out of that? Absolutely. Providing your partner stays away from that menu.

I have found that the depth in relationships takes time. Depth cannot be instant. Instant will always be temporary. But, if one day you wake up tired of temporary people. “Then darling dive right in, follow my lead”. I love that song now, I hope you’ll consider listening to it as well.
