ATLANTA – A number of areas across metro Atlanta are waking up to uprooted trees, damaged buildings, and downed power lines after Michael ripped through the state overnight.
The hardest hit areas were in south Georgia, but fallen trees are being reported across the state.
Several trees fell in East Point, including the Jefferson Park neighborhood where a large tree toppled in the middle of Elsinore Street at Cleveland Avenue, making the road impassable. Other fallen trees were reported near Paul D. West Middle School and Connally Drive.
In Cherokee County, Upper Bethany Road at Soap Creek Road was shut down early Thursday morning after a tree fell across the road. Power lines also fell in the area and another tree fell on Epperson Road near Scott Road.
Other reports of damage or trees down in metro Atlanta:
- Highway 61 north of Villa Rica
- Andrews Drive at West Paces Ferry Rd. in NW Atlanta, tree blocking intersection
- Garmon Road near Hughes Road, water in the roadway
Farther north, in Greene County, a woman was in her car when a tree limb came down on top of her and shattered glass everywhere. The woman was hurt by the broken glass and was taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
“We want to make sure no one is on the road,” an officer told FOX 5 in Greensboro.
Police said their main concern in Greene County is blowing debris as gusty winds continue throughout the morning.
Michael, now a tropical storm, continues to weaken as it makes its way toward the Carolinas.
