Exploring Columbus Georgia… Mark’s City Grill

By Kenneth Stepp

I have been enjoying the town of Columbus Georgia. I was invited to dinner by a friend and asked what they thought would be a great place. Without hesitation, Mark’s City Grill. In a short time we were walking into the restaurant. I looked around and noticed three things. It was clean, the staff was friendly, and I felt great being there. They seated us and the night continued.

My friend had the pork cutlets, I had the meatloaf. The meatloaf, I was told, was Mark’s mom’s recipe. She had passed away a few years back. It was the best I had ever tasted in my life. The pork cutlets were equally terrific. The sides were broccoli casserole and asparagus. This was going to be a meal I would remember. Everything was perfect.

My friend, a Columbus native, began telling me about Mark Jones. He owns several restaurants around town. In my mind I was thinking I would try them all. Then she started talking about Mark the man. Or should I say the legend. She spoke with a reverence I seldom see. He was in an auto accident in May of 2018 and was paralyzed from the neck down. I saw what he had built and that saddened me.

My friend told me the town, locals, and even his competitors rallied behind him. Rumor has it that he is getting treatment in Atlanta Ga and is walking again. I hope he gets it all back, if he can put a business together like this, we need him to take care of these businesses. I came away from Mark’s City Grill full, and touched by his story. I am a retired professional fighter and appreciate someone who will not quit.

I think I will be in Columbus every week and will make his eateries my favorite places. If you are within 50 miles of Columbus and hungry, try Mark’s City Grill. They wowed me. I believe they will wow everyone that eats there. Placing a star value seems unneeded at this point.
