Single Again… The Pursuit…

By Kenneth Stepp

To pursue someone… Matters of the heart can be confusing. Mine tend to be more clumsy than anything else. I am chasing her daily, my soulmate and dream girl. That brings into mind the greatest, most aggressive, and resourceful pursuer of all times. Wile E Coyote. He was tenacious, he was a magnificent failure every time, and he lived through things that should have killed him. Well, here I am, furry tailed, long eared, and my Acme credit card in hand. Waiting for that lovely beep beep of my baby. I guess waiting is the key to that. And I am terrible at it.

“If you pursue happiness, you are an ordinary person. If happiness pursues you, you are an extraordinary person. Do not chase happiness; let it chase you.”

― Petar Dunov

Is that it? Not chase her? Am I to expect her to fall from the sky? Last week I was told she might get into an elevator and smile at me. An interesting scenario indeed. But I am seldom on elevators these days. Nope, I will continue searching and will continue failing till I succeed, or die. Whichever one comes first. Moreover, I am going to that desert, wait for my feathered love, and lose until she stops running. I already know when I paint a tunnel in the side of a mountain, she can go through it, I cannot. And if I try to trap her under a giant anvil, it won’t fall on anyone but me. So I already know so many important things about this chasing thing. I wonder if Acme ever reimbursed Wile E for any of those flawed devices they sold him? In the end, whatever is left of me will belong to the one that is meant to have me. Or I die in the hunt, not a bad way to go I guess.

“I have discovered that you will achieve nothing if you pursue everything. Be specific and stay focused.”

That quote brings up a great point. Old Wile E only had one target, one focus. The Roadrunner. In the age of the internet, online dating, and other social media, it’s hard to stay focused on just one. So many distractions, and so many perceived options. I remember when my friends use to look for cars for their kids. I watched them closely. One thing I noticed was the wrong car showed up before the right one did.

My pastor was looking for the right car for his son. He called me excited one day and asked if I would take a look at the one he found. He knew nothing about cars. I was considered “The Expert”. I drove to meet him. He was in a very good looking older low end Porsche. He saw this awesome red car. I saw a hunk of junk held together with string and duct tape. I smiled and said, take it back. Now the right one will show up. He wondered why I would say that, but he waited. The next day the local Mercedes Benz store traded for a beautiful Acura coupe in red. Perfect records, loaded, never been smoked in, and two thousand dollars cheaper. I paid them and left in the car. I called my pastor and told him his car was in. That was ten years ago and that car has been passed to all his kids along the way. I hope you get my point. The right one is there. Pursue with a patient heart.

“To grasp love, I must grasp the fact that it is a creation of God and therefore it is forever beyond me. But the very fact that it is forever beyond me is the very thing that prompts me to forever pursue it.”

― Craig D. Loun

In the end. I have been told I was loved, just never showed I was loved. The object of my desire will look me in the eye and I will know we are in love and will show one another that love every day for the rest of our lives.
