Single Again… The Dance

By Kenneth Stepp

Have you ever missed someone and thought that you will always miss them? You were a we, then you weren’t.  You kind of knew the day you broke up that the breakup would have consequences, but you knew you had to anyway. That mental pause was there but you felt it was best.

Memory lane, for me, is a frequent stop. I write about love, dating, relationships, and all the things that travel with them. Today I ran across a song that reminds me of her, of us. Garth Brooks sang a song years ago called, The Dance. It brings her back to me instantly, and of course I have to play it several times. I decided to share it with you.

Looking back on the memory of

The dance we shared beneath the stars above

For a moment all the world was right

How could I have known you’d ever say goodbye

And now I’m glad I didn’t know

The way it all would end the way it all would go

I get that. Would I have chanced it? Knowing my heart would become so damaged, knowing how deeply I would fall, only to be alone again? Probably not, but I was so gone for her. The moment our eyes met, I knew. Have you ever just known? Looking back, it was so risky. Yey maybe the most exciting thing I’ve ever attempted, and I’ve attempted more than most.

Our lives are better left to chance I could have missed the pain

But I’d have to miss the dance

Holding you I held everything

For a moment wasn’t I the king

But if I’d only known how the king would fall

Honestly, it felt like I would be ok. After all, time heals all wounds, right? It really doesn’t at all. Time for me, taught me how to live with the pain, love, when it’s real, isn’t a malady to heal from, it’s forever, it’s a state of being, it’s not simply something we one day forget about. Love stays, it’s a life sentence.

Hey who’s to say you know I might have changed it all

And now I’m glad I didn’t know

The way it all would end the way it all would go

I loved our dance, even though it was brief, even though it ended. I love the memories we made in such a brief moment in time. They are treasures that when I hear the right song or read a poem about love, revisit in a very sweet way. I’m not sure I’d trade them to not have the pain. Maybe not knowing and taking chances would be ill advised, but I shudder at the thought of what I would have missed.

Our lives are better left to chance I could have missed the pain

But I’d of had to miss the dance

Yes my life is better left to chance

I could have missed the pain but I’d of had to miss the dance

I think I’ve answered my question. Had I known, I’d still jump, I would do it all over again. She was special and always will be. Of course, she would be special without me, well, she is special without me. I wish everyone of my single friends good luck in your journey. Go slow, take your time, guard your heart, but guard it loosely.

I’m going to put my headphones on and listen just one more time. I can see her eyes looking back at me while the song plays. Find your song, your memories, and your path. Remember that we are all on the same journey, be kind above all else. Being completely honest would be a bonus as well. Below is a link to The Dance. Enjoy… Eyes closed.

    • Thank you Cindy. The song means more than it should to me. Memories of loss. But I still go back and listen when I want to think of her.
