Single Again… Radar Love

By Kenneth Stepp

Connection… Connection with another human being is amazing. The power and overall immersion of that connection can be almost mythical. To man, unbelievable. On a trip recently, I heard an old song, a classic rock song, Radar Love. It has a great beat and a drum solo unmatched by almost any other song.

My travel partner’s husband was a drummer, it was their song. I just knew he was in heaven, playing along with the song as we listened to that solo, thank you Micheal. Heavenly drums, who knew?

We’ve got a thing that’s called radar love

We’ve got a wave in the air, radar love

The radio is playing some forgotten song

Brenda Lee’s comin’ on strong

I’ve had this kind of connection only once. We could feel one another. If one of us needed the other, somehow, there we’d be, together. I can’t explain it, science can’t either. I believe the science arena would even scoff at the thought of it. But it was there and it was as real as anything I know of.

So, how does a person experience this phenomenon? In my opinion, unconditional love between two people is where we start. I have that with my person. Even though we haven’t spoken in years, it’s there. I know she’s ok because my heart tells me so. Inexplicable as it seems, it’s as real as the sofa I’m sitting in as I type these words.

The road has got me hypnotized

And I’m speedin’ into a new sunrise

When I get lonely and I’m sure I’ve had enough

She sends her comfort comin’ in from above

We don’t need no letter at all

We’ve got a thing that’s called radar love

We’ve got a light in the sky, radar love

So, how does a person experience this phenomenon? In my opinion, unconditional love between two people is where we start. I have that with my person. Even though we haven’t spoken in years, it’s there. I know she’s ok because my heart tells me so. Inexplicable as it seems, it’s as real as the sofa I’m sitting in as I type these words.

I suppose that should say, we don’t need a cell phone at all. But, the song was written in 1973, and cell phones were simply props in SCI FI movies back then. Love was the same though. Of course distractions are far more plentiful today than in 1973. There are times I wonder if we’ve made any real progress at all. One would have to weigh out the distractions against the conveniences we have now.

Back to connection. I guess the easiest way to explain what I’m looking for is to describe the connection I am looking for. Well, in my romantic mind, God Himself is stitching our hearts together with invisible twine. Maybe even as I write this. Lately I have been writing about becoming someone. I am becoming hers and she is becoming mine. Will divine intervention create perfect timing? In my heart I know we are becoming one another’s at the same time.

In the end, are these simply beautiful thoughts and theories, or do I finally understand the way love works? I’ll let you know….

No more speed, I’m almost there

Gotta keep cool now, gotta take care

Last car to pass, here I go

Radar Love
