Don’t Like Our Jail? Stay Out of It.

Sheriff Butch Conway and friend.

Gwinnett County Sheriff Butch Conway may be a no non-sense guy, but he is also known for treating people fairly and for his innovative approaches to his job. (The Jail Dogs/Cats program being one example.) A review of the Sheriff Department’s Facebook page reveals that Conway and his staff are also compassionate. But sometimes, that just isn’t enough, as the following post on the department’s Facebook page illustrates.

It’s important to Sheriff Conway that his office runs smoothly and that everyone performs well. When he saw a recent Facebook post from a former inmate complaining about the medical care she received while she was an inmate in our jail, he ordered a review of her medical file to ensure that she received proper care while she was here.

It turns out that during the four weeks that this inmate was in our jail, she was seen by medical staff no less than seven times for routine screenings and a couple of ailments that are common this time of year. She received allergy medicine when she requested it. She received antibiotics when she needed it, along with some Tylenol to help with her discomfort.

Ironically, I had the same or similar illness recently. It’s just that time of year when respiratory viruses and sinus infections are rampant. My doctor gave me allergy medication and the exact same antibiotics as this inmate received. The only difference is that I paid for it myself, not the taxpayers.

The moral of the story is that even when you do everything you’re supposed to do, there are some people who will never be happy with the level of service that you provide. Even when it’s good service. Don’t take it personally. They probably complain everywhere they go. Our best advice is that if you don’t like the way we run the Gwinnett County Jail, stay out of it.

Sounds like great advice.
